What you can expect

You can’t visit Rottnest Island without making a trip to The Basin. This popular swimming hole is a favourite for locals and tourists thanks to the crystal clear water and colourful shallow reefs. Perfect for novice snorkellers, the protected bay is clear of strong currents and crashing waves, giving you uninterrupted snorkelling around the reef clusters. Visitors rave about the beautiful waters, its suitability for all ages and swimming levels and the helpful lifeguards on duty during the day. Dive right into the cool waters off the edge of the reef and explore the beautiful marine life that live in the area. There are various picnic spots around the area as well as change rooms and bathrooms. Swimmers are urged to be careful as venomous animals such as blue ringed octopus live in tide pools and coral reefs and have been found in the area before.
